A potted history of Domino Part 3

Domino’s darker days were coming, the next 12 months nearly saw our downfall…. the fall and rise of the Domino Empire.

Over the summer and into the Autumn of 2010, it became increasingly clear that a World War was coming, broadly polarised as North (NUTS, NATO and BONE to a lesser extent) vs South (Domino and RID). The final war of any note before it all kicked off was Domino vs uNiTe/Webash in late summer 2010.

This was a prelude to the main event, and was again a win for Domino. To be fair to uNiTe and Webash they were always on a hiding to nothing, located where they were in the meatgrinder of the Central/Central-East, with membership made up of ex Banned, and perhaps lacking the cohesion to wage a late-stage war. Msobrien conceded defeat on November 6th 2010.

I also think it’s fair to pay tribute to NUTS, who became regarded as the ‘Quality’ tribe of W38. Ably led by the excellent OlafSchlief, they were a proper ‘elite’ tribe; small in number, high in quality. In the externals, many people started predicting the War between Domino and NUTS/NATO; we maintained our NAP with NUTS until November 2010, the month which saw the war start that would come to define and decide W38.

To strengthen our East we became allies with R.I.D, the tribe that was composed of the old core of Asylum, WeBash and C.O.D. Whilst they had some stout players, they were one of the weaker tribes, and tensions between them and NATO were always going to lead to conflict. We in Domino felt we needed them as a buffer; I’m not sure it was our best-ever decision and in all honesty we were using them to put the east in a ‘holding pattern’ whilst we concentrated on our Northern borders where we knew that NUTS would be our main challenge. After some last-minute shuffling of players – MXRiderTP moved over to NUTS notably, due to being good friends with Olaf and some others in NUTS – war was declared.

Nov 1st – Nato declare on R.I.D
Nov 19th – Domino declare on NATO
Nov 26th – Domino declare on NUTS

However - within Domino during this time, all was not well. ISE, our founder and duke, became increasingly inactive. Whilst he was always there in the background, his studies and exams became his main focus, and he began to lose interest in the day-to-day grind of nobling, operations and all the other little details that are needed to inspire a cohesive Tribe. At the same time Tracey – the Queen Aphrodite account – more or less left W38 to lead her own tribe on W50. Her account was never unattended and never sat, but also never grew significantly or participated in major Ops. Both of these Accounts (both of them Dukes) were key to our northern frontline, so we entered the World War with some key participants missing; and the task of leading Domino fell squarely on Chrsswmr’s shoulders. The curse of inactivity hampered us, as it always does to any big tribe at some stage.

However, you always have to fight your wars with what you have, and life is never perfect…. so the War went on.

NUTS pretty much tore into R.I.D making sweeping gains at will, as did NATO. Domino had huge early success against NUTS, mainly against the MXRider account which was in an awful place geographically, and inactive to boot.

After several months of war the NATO/NUTS alliance was performing well, but not overwhelmingly. Their gains against RID were offset by our gains against their inactives. Figures were skewed a touch by Domino’s use of the academy tribe Wraith-Reaper (WR) – but broadly speaking, by the end of February, NUTS/NATO were leading in caps by around 3000 to 2200. It started to fall into the pattern of a very long, hard slog…..

At this stage (early 2011), there was a feeling within Domino of things ‘drifting’ a little. Whilst we were a bit behind in war stats, it wasn’t by enough to cause genuine concern, and we always backed ourselves to defend. We were always able to mobilise large amounts of support for the frontlines, Catninja being at the core of this. If anyone ever hit a Domino stack the chances were you were hitting 10 of her full D-vills. But conversely, it was difficult for us to see how we were going to crack NUTS (if you pardon the pun). Olaf especially had an aura of invincibility, and a certain remorselessness, more than ably backed by Llehar and the rest of them. For the first time in our history, we were finding it difficult to see where victory was going to come from.

And then of course – and maybe due in part to the above – we had the Cheesy split. More on that in my next post.
