The same thing has been talked about before. Its just not something that has ever been allowed as far as I can remember. To be honest - It doesn't allow any more unfair an advantage as someone who has superior skills versus someone who doesnt. Our voting base seems to always go for a similar style signature and it would be a shame to see others not entering because they can animate. A mediocre animation will seem nicer than a great sig in some aspects and I think that is where most peoples fear comes into play. I can animate so I cont care either way but in the past Ive always been against them in a regular contest. I think maybe every other week we could allow animations to see how it goes. For those who did the animations and are mad they cant be entered, you were in the last conversation about it so its your own fault. I would be up for in the future trying either a contest or like I reccomended an every other week its allowed type deal to see how it goes, to see if it discourages entries or promotes more -

I would rather see a single round in the pool as animation, which would solve everything and make everyone happy if those in favour of animation thought about it logically.

Hello guys..
Why aren't animation tags allowed in the sotw?
Syntex said I should ask you guys in this topic..

Personally I don't see a problem with animated tags? They just move, that's all ^^
It's made in photoshop and it has the sizes of a normal tag, I don't see why it shouldn't be allowed.

So, a lot of comments please :D

SOTW stands for signature of the week. Animation is against the forum rules when it comes to being included in a signature. Now I'll admit I didn't read the thread so not sure if this has been brought up before. But simply allowing animation inside a signature of the week competition when animation isn't allowed in signatures is a bit odd to me.

Considering that it has never been allowed and as such has never been a part of SOTW, you could take a wild stab in the dark that perhaps it isn't allowed. Even so you could have checked before starting your piece to avoid problems.

I prefer to speak formally in a discussion, or would you rather me just write "Omg y0u is wrong!?!"

You started a discussion that people like myself feel strongly about, did you not expect people to argue their point with you ?

P.s I changed your wording in my quote ... wouldn't want you to be giving me an infraction.

Why should I check it before, if every normal (partly) graphic forum allows it? You guys are exceptions lol
Speak formally is fine :) But you could use some easier words so I could understand your sentence and reply xD
Sure you can argue :) But for me it doesn't matter anymore because sotw is over

An infraction for four stars? yh right lol

Extreme content
Anything deemed politically or religiously extreme, pornographic, illegal, or unsavory in any way is prohibited in this game whether posted or referenced. Racist or ethnic bashing comments are forbidden even if used in jest. Mentioning drugs is allowed, but comments that play down the use of illegal drugs or promote the use of said substances are strictly forbidden. Please note that starring out characters like "F*ck" does not make it any less a swear word. It is still perfectly understandable and still intentionally offensive, and thus is forbidden in all forms. This is Similarly the case for Acronyms such as GTFO or STFU. The meanings are known, and they are warnable or infractable offences.

Quoted the rule which GE is on about. As far as I am aware that rule goes for every single TW server, so you should be aware of it :)

Back on the subject. Animation takes time to learn as any style does. A lot of people decide not to do it as it can take up so much time, creating every individual frame for the animation. Most of us know how to use GIMP or PS to animate for .gif images, but that is about as far as our knowledge goes. Generally though SOTW's don't have animated piece's unless specified. The .net, .uk and .us TW servers don't have their SOTW's with animations, nor does Pimped Pixels, Delta Visions and older ones such as Graphics Core. Even SOTW groups on deviantart rarely allow animations in their competitions. So it is quite a common trend not to have animated signatures in competitions. Personally I would prefer to have animation as a SOTW theme, that way people can then choose to enter an animated signature or not at all, same for all of the other themes that we have :)

But **** can be anything, you should just think i ment 'cola' xD
Animation is allowed on the Dutch graphic forum, on planet renders, tag freak, GFXforums,...
But yh, those forums are of a higher level, so maybe it's normal that it's allowed there.

If it was cola though then you would not have starred it out would you? You have to think about the context in which it has been starred out, seeing as we are not in a "fill in the missing word game" and the fact that you said "pissing me off" places the stars in the context of a swear word, which as you know now is against the rules.

Are those forums really of a higher level though? Once again it comes down to personal opinion. I find myself more with an artistic view on signatures, and because of such I prefer signatures that are made with a story behind them, created by the scene. As a result I prefer Pimped Pixels (ranked number 1 gfx forum by the way) for the work done by their members and their great community atmosphere. Places such as Planet Renders tend to have more of an elitist view to things, and have quite a tensive atmosphere where it is hard to get on well there unless you fit the views of the popular members. Certainly animation is allowed on every gfx forum that I know, but not usually in SOTW competitions.

Let's leave the discussion of starring out words for another day... In this case it was sufficiently ambiguous imo as to not seriously offend anyone. I personally interpreted is as "shit", which is allowed in the general context.

Napoli, would you not agree that adding it into the theme pool would be a reasonable compromise?

Planet renders wasn't the only forum I mentioned ;) Just look at the dutch forum (where I come from).
Never heard of Pimped pixels, but I don't think it's of a high level (sure it can be that the atmosphere is good there).

Yh it was supposed to be shit ^^

But like I said before, it doesn't matter to me anymore :) I just asked it for this one sotw, but since it's already busy..
You could do that though, but probably nobody would enter ^^

If you'd ask me, I'd say to run it once as a separate competition and give everyone two or three weeks perhaps. That way, if people that have yet to really mess with animated images, they get some time to learn how to do so. And if after that there's still no one up for it then you'll have to accept this simply isn't the user base that enjoys an animated signature.

THANK YOU...

And might I say make it more of an open animated art competition... who cares about an animated competition strictly about signatures if you can't use them or such? Yes, there is a quality of versatility in being able to use them, but, quite frankly, many would rather turn to medium and large art with animation. I'd also reckon there'd be a number of adventurous souls who would take on non-sprite animation, which would be neat to see. :)

The bigger the image, the less animation you can have due to file size limit on image hosting sites.

or.... you could upload it as a video file or a .swf and just put a link on the forums. :icon_wink:

But then it's starting to get beyond graphics and into video animation, which is kind of different. If we were doing that you could have a sub-section for "animation" because making videos is quite different to the kind of artistic/design graphics we focus on.

As Harbinger said, at that point it'd be easier to capture video and layer around in Premiere. Gif animation and video animation are two separate things. I'd impose a file size limit of 1Mb as that is the limit most image sharing sites have.
