So would have thought that a topic with the title Discussion: would have turned into a spam thread? :-|

Yeah, this was pretty much the only serious topic here...

Also I'm pretty sure my last post broke 3 forum rules. One for off topic, one for trolling somones grammar, and is there a rule about advertising websites?

If AYK is reading this... Did I ever tell you how you're my favourite mod?? :icon_biggrin::icon_biggrin:

Oh crap!

Well.... screw your rules. I live by my own!
Rule #1. Noffish always wins.
Rule #2. If Noffish loses, see Rule #1.

I've just been enjoying something to actually read in here the last couple of days to be honest.
On a more serious note, you guys should try to keep the spam to the spam threads, and the real discussion to discussion threads :icon_wink:

Well then riddle me this Mr.Modifier, or Modifitator, which ever you prefer.

Curse words are banned from the forum because they are inappropriate for some of the younger players, correct?

So then does it make it alright to hide the phrases/words in such a way that the less mature members cannot pick up on it?

To be honest, there are few ways your going to be able to hide the word, without using an entirely different word, that the youth are not going to pick up on. In generally when you allow the use of slang/swear words, people use them as the only means to emphasize their points constantly, with no thought to the rest of the English language, and overly use them to the point it's crass, so in the end it's better to have the use of the words removed, so people can use the little peanut in their heads to come up with more interesting, and thought provoking ways to say what they mean.

I don't believe we've banned all curse words, just the most crass of them, and I personally don't mind the use of the other swear words, and won't infract for them, as long as they aren't over used, aren't directed at a another member here as an insult, and help explain/define what the person is trying to say. If people start using them

Well to be honest, the closest thing i could find in the forum rules about curse words was this.

Extreme content
Anything deemed politically or religiously extreme, pornographic, illegal, or unsavory in any way is prohibited in this game whether posted or referenced. Racist or ethnic bashing comments are forbidden even if used in jest. Mentioning drugs is allowed, but comments that play down the use of illegal drugs or promote the use of said substances are strictly forbidden. Please note that starring out characters like "F*ck" does not make it any less a swear word. It is still perfectly understandable and still intentionally offensive, and thus is forbidden in all forms. This is Similarly the case for Acronyms such as GTFO or STFU. The meanings are known, and they are warnable or infractable offences.

So then i can only assume that the majority of the judgment lies with the moderator, which scares me that they let people like Pkiwarrior be a moderator. But regardless...

I can't help but agree with most of what you said. Most people simply cannot take being challenged on the forums, and resort to cavemen like grunts and foul language. And unfortunately, as in all things, stupid people ruin it for everyone. Which is why i love that you take everything as it comes, and don't simply infract for anything even close to a curse word, like some mods do (pki).

However, the thing i did disagree on is that its hard to hide your meanings/words, in a way that the "youth" wont pick up on. The youngins are very easy to fool. After all, rappers have been doing it for years.

I can't really comment on PKi, never really knew them, or paid attention to how they moderated forums, but I'm sure there was a reason they were hired for the job! Different moderators have different strengths/weaknesses, at the end of the day they are doing a volunteer job, and are doing what they feel is best for the forums. In some cases a ban on all swear words is necessary due to the maturity level in some of the forums, really it's often the members of the particular forum that change the environment for themselves, as you said sometimes a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch :)

Maybe it's not the youngins being fooled, but the reverse is true, they've pulled the wool over your eyes, and made you think they don't understand, when in reality they do! I have to figure, while I may be older, and have had more over all experience in the use of swear words than most youth, it's when your young that you tend to use them as part of their regular vocabulary, so the chances are they are going to be up to stuff on the latest slang, and have the most recent practice!

Speaking of robots pretending to be mods...

Ass is totally allowed. There's no reason to censor it (especially because if it wasn't allowed censoring it wouldn't get you anywhere).

But yeah, I'll kick your ass in chess sometime. :icon_cool:

QUESTION

If I was to say "Hey Hyper, you're a <censored>!!!" would that be infractable?

By not 'starring' out the word you can't just count the letters, so it could mean literally anything. The missing word is totally to the readers discretion. Those who use colourful language will insert an offensive term, those who don't won't.

I suppose again this would come down to the moderators judgment.

Disclaimer: I'm not really looking for ways to push the boundaries, just curious should the situation arise.
