Farming vs Scavenging

The last world I played on was w42, so please excuse this question if it has been talked about several times over, but it seems like scavenging makes farming kind of pointless? I started off farming every barb in my area with 20 spears like I am used to, and they were netting may 300 res per 5 hour trip. You can do that in 30 min with scavenging. I'm sure once the barbs are able to hold more it evens out, but for early game seems like full scavenge is the way to go. Anyone disagree?

best way now from what ive learned (also my first scavenge world). dont go for lc right away just use teir 3 scavange with 350-400 spear. later to be used in tandem with microfarming.

Why do you say?

Because you only have 17.64% chance of not losing 1 spear. That means your expected profit is 405.29 resources from an army that if utilized properly carries 500. So choosing to farm with that army utilizes their loot, on average, at a 81.06% efficiency. Spears sent with swords are 81.8% efficient as those sent alone.

Sure you can gamble and hope you are part of the lucky 17.64%, but it should average itself out over time so you'll be worse off. There's no excuse to be sending spears alone when the quests give you enough swords to use as escorts.

Admittedly I didn't realize it was this close when I made the statement, both I and the OP seem to have thought spears each loot 15.

That makes sense. Thanks for the info.

Most people now will have a small reserve of PP. The best move is to use this, to work towards level 3 scab and get around 400 spears quick.

Using all 3 levels of scavenger, some playing solo fairly active can pull in 30-50k res a day. You would be lucky to get 10k from farming the barbs.

Then once you have level 4 that only goes up. And if you have a co-player when you are inactive to continue it. (if not send more troops on the biggest haul) until you are awake.

Day 4 on this world I scavenged more than the 2nd highest farmer on the world hauled; I prioritized scavenging since there weren't many barbs nearby. But once BP wears off and there's bigger player villages open, farming starts becoming much more competitive: I'm a solo player doing a defensive build and only PP farming on this world, so not exactly an uber-active farmer, but by day 7 or 8 farming was about a third of my troop-based income, and over the last three days it's averaged 49%. I'm rank 283 for most hauls in a day from 76k hauled yesterday, to provide some context there.

So long and short, they're both worthwhile: Scavenge with spears (and sp/sw for the lowest tier) and farm with LC.

How many spears would you think to stop building them and focus on axes? Ive been spear spamming + scavenging and it's made a world of difference to previous start ups. But when does it stop being efficient to dump resources on spears?
Also is level 4 particularly worth it?

I build 600 SP in every village and scavenge top 3 tiers with 200 each. I don't consider those troops as defence as they are never home. Scavenging results from 3 villages are equal to farming barbs with 1200 LC (3LC farm runs)

Personally, I have had a lot more success with scavenging. It did take me a couple days of bad farming to realise how usefull it is though (havent played in 8 years).

For those who want to maximise the resources from scavenging, I found and modified a spreadsheet on the forums. It's slightly better than evenly spreading them and much better than only using your highest lvl.

Here is the forum post
The Scavenging Guide - The Future of Early Game Farming

and here is the spreadsheet modified for our world

Note the variable for lvl 4 isn't correct as I haven't unlocked it yet to find it but I've included the model to find it if you have the lvl unlocked.

This is gold, thank you for that!!

anyone who plays early game seriously for over 3 days should be aware that scavenging is a way to go... everything regarding optimized use for best income has been explained in posts above, spreadsheet is great tool and kudos to whoever wrote it.

i would just like to add that in order to get all 4 levels return at the same time you should use 7,5 : 3 : 1,5 : 1 total possible haul ratio. it's easy if you use same troop type, bit calcs needs to be done if you are using more... it isn't best income, did calcs for 3,5k axes and the difference is around 10k ress units per day if you send both way constantly. it just might be convinient to someone to send all 4 at the same time plus you have them more often during the day at your dissposal should something come up.

This is my first scavenging world and I am planning to keep using this feature till I have a decent amount of LC to farm with, cause right now, most barbs are dry and it seems much more worth it to scavenge. Later on when I get a good amount of LC, I will be able to farm much more efficiently without using the scavenging feature.

you can get the formulas and the correct factors by viewing the page source. Typically the duration factor (or one of them I forget which specific name) is different for every world.

Yup, here are the formulas:
time = (((lootFactor * capacity) ^ 2 * 100) ^ durationExponent + durationInitialSeconds) * durationFactor
capacity = Math.ceil(1 / (10 * lootFactor) * Math.pow(time / durationFactor - durationInitialSeconds,1 / (2 * durationExponent)));

With these you could calculate the troop composition for a fixed amount of scavenge time and vice-versa. Or more...

Just wanted to say thanks a lot for posting this, but have you gotten around to unlocking level 4? Level 3 is taking up more and more time each run and I was thinking if I should go for level 4 or wait a little longer.

Yep I unlocked it ages ago. As long as you don't absolutely need the troops then lvl 4 is totally worth it.
