Not spitting your dummy out and disbanding the tribe is pretty much the one thing a Duke needs to do.

Just pass the position to someone else then leave.

Maybe he realized the team he had wouldnt work and wanted to give them a fresh start. On w89 our duke disbanded tribe and started attacking his old tribemates until he was rimmed. It ended up being the best thing for the ex-members as they were able to renegotiate diplomacy, merges, and win the world.
