On 14th May, 1940, the KarmaX broadcast a message asking for volunteers for the RAM (Ready Any Minute). On 23rd August, 1940, Darkhelmet changed the name of RAM to the Home Guard.
The Home Guard was formed when there was a real risk of invasion. Most men who could fight were already dead or ran to other tribe (*cough* t33cher *cough* never back down *cough*), those that were left were either too young, too old, or in reserved occupations (those jobs vital to the war effort). The men who volunteered to join the Home Guard at this time were expected to fight an invasion of well armed, well trained Phoenx troops with nothing more than a collection of old villages and half built nukes, and iron pipes with bayonets welded on the end!
Nobody was expecting any men to volunteer for the Home Guard. Within the first month, 7 men and 1 woman had volunteered, and by the end of June, 1940, the total number of volunteers was over nine thousand!!! The number of men in the Home Guard did not fall.
The Home Guard was formed with the intention of delaying an enemy invasion force for as long as possible and to give the Leadership and the regular army time to form a front line from which the enemy invasion could be repelled.
The Home Guard was eventually issued with more conventional weapons, once their nukes re-built and their defence had built, they took this opportunity to get a front with the enemy invaders. Due to the shear volume of villages they had lost they were able to educate a good few hundred nobles easily. Each. They were able to noble the empty barbarian villages of their fallen tribe mates and build lots of nukes and nobles and plenty of strong defence.
Because the people who fled RAM were so close, the Home Guard were able to re-build troops and noble the cowards at quite a rapid rate.
The spirit of the Home Guard had never been as high as it was when they were giving it to the traitors that ran from their once proud tribe. The fact that they were losing so many villages on one front, gave them the power to noble the traitors even faster due to the abundance of nobles they were able to educate.
Even once the threat of invasion had passed, the Home Guard remained in existence manning guard posts and performing other duties to free up regular troops for duties overseas. In 1942 the National Service Act allowed for compulsory enrolment where units were below strength. At this time, the lowest rank within the Home Guard, 'volunteer', was renamed to 'private' to match the regular army usage.
