Nordulv’s Startup Guide
_________________________________

Intro
I am by no means a ‘pro’ at startup. I have created this guide purely mathematically, after I saw NoSleeps’s startup, which was very similar to my own. So in the interests of myself and the community, I have worked it all out...
Having said that, this is not aimed at newbies. The guide assumes that you already have a fair understanding of the game and its terms. All time values are at base 6.

Contents
1 First Steps
-1.1 Resource Mines
-1.2 Troops and Farming
-1.3 Farming Escort

2 Moar Farming
-2.1 Preparation
-2.2 Light Cavalry
-2.3 Even More Farming

3 Academy and Ennoblements
-3.1 Preparation
-3.2 Reducing Build Times
-3.3 HQ and Smithy
-3.4 Choosing the Right Village
-3.5 Taking That Village

1 - First Steps
1.1 - Resource Mines
This is possibly one of the most mathematically important stages of the game. A single wrong move here could put you 100000 points behind a few hundred villages later. I have been through a lot of different combinations here, but there a few good ones. You will also notice that many of the better ones do not start with the conventional clay 1, timber 1, iron 1. This is because the amount of extra resources produced / time is going to be more valuable than the resources lost from the other resource mines that will have to be built later. The titles of the sections are the levels of the mines in this format: timber/clay/iron.

6/3/1
This resource structure is a high risk all or nothing strategy. If you get bad hauls later on, you are not going to have anything to fall back on, but the short time taken means you will get to spears first, gaining a valuable few hours of full hauls before people around you start farming.

My Choice:
Clay 1
Clay 2
Wood 1
Clay 3
Iron 1
Wood 2
wood 3
Wood 4
Wood 5
Wood 6

This takes 12.43 hours, and leaves you with 183/24/81 resources at the time of completion.

Important:It is very interesting comparing my choice and the fist example here – the switching of 2 buildings creates a 2 minute gap between the times. I chose the top one however because it does leave you in a better position for spears later, but it depends slightly on what you are hauling.

7/3/1
Pretty basic. If you use this, you should be aiming for a higher spear count than the 7/4/2. In this setup different strategies really don’t make much of a difference – the longer it takes, the more wood you will have to make spears. However, you won’t get the proper clay/wood ratio if you go for the longer ones, so my choice is the shortest one.

7/4/2
Like the 7/3/1, but for the people who have less farming time later, or want to get axes later.

8/5/3
Not my favorate. For those who have less online time, or are planning on cat rushing. Having said that, looking at the maths it seems to be much better value than the 7/4/2.

My Choice:
Wood 1
Clay 1
Clay 2
Iron 1
Clay 3
Wood 2
Wood 3
Clay 4
Clay 5
Wood 4
Iron 2
Wood 5
Iron 3
Wood 6
Wood 7
Wood 8

Time: 20.03 hours Res: 207/47/56

Using this, I chose to use the 7/3/1. It gives a much higher resource output than the 7/4/2, and takes slightly less time. However, after spears, I will change it to the 7/4/2, as the clay will be need for the smithy, barracks and research of Light Cavalry.

1.2 Troops and Farming
This section is less math based, and more just outright activity wins. But there are a few things you should learn to change based on your activity and or area. I noticed that in many other guides it says "A good player should adapt to his environment". Adapt to what? Well, there are many varying factors in this game: activity, farming ground, skill level of players around you, tribes etc., and learning not just to adapt but how to adapt is very important.

Adaptation:
Activity
Adapting to activity is probably the easiest. The more time you have online each day, the more troops and the lower the resource mines. The more time players around you have each day, the higher the resource mines, higher the hiding place and the more troops, while trying to get swords as soon as you can manage while completing the other steps properly.

Farming Ground
The more barbarians you have near you, the lower the resource mines and the more troops you should have. Also, depending on what you are hauling, you may want to add in the extra mines here and there - say you have a 100% extra wood produced bonus village touching you, you are going to want to add maybe 2 clay levels and 1 iron level to keep up with the amount of wood you are pulling in. However generally, you first set of mines is going to want to stay the same.

Skill Level of Nearby Players
This is sometimes quite difficult to gauge. Just because someone is active 24/7, doesn't mean they are good, and vice versa. If you are sending out farming runs, and you get an attack landing sub second after your troops return from them, then they are most likely quite good. But you don't want to wait for this to happen to do anything about it. If you receive restart mails, then it is possible they are above average, although this isn't solid. You should really try prying information from your neighbors through friendly conversation. Ask them how long they've been playing etc. This is the best way to get a good idea of their experience. If you think they are better than you, try protecting yourself with swords, or spiking a lot of the farms around them. Or make friends. Then they won't attack. :icon_cool:

So if you have about 7 hours of online time a day, 2 toughing barbs, one of them a bonus village of +100% clay production, and you think you have one very good and active player in your 7x7 who doesn't seem interested in a friendly alliance, then your modifications will look at bit like this:

8/5/3 resource mines,
-1/2/2 mines,
+1/0/1, and extra troops,
+5 hidingplace and -1/1/1

Then you will end up with 7/2/1 and extra troops.

Worth continuing? Please comment :)

Doesn't take into account the new quest system so so far is pretty irrelevant.

But I haven't got that far yet :icon_redface:

That, 5/3/1 (best with new quest system) can be built with constant queues from 0/0/0. The order matter only on if you want to come out with 2 extra clay or 2 extra wood.

Well, I have a bit of editing to do then, don't I? :icon_cool:

Better then the usual terribad guides, although you should take quests into account as sexy sexy Muldie did:3

About how much more stuff do you intend to put in here before you'll consider it done?
Or, to be more specific, do you intend to put in anything beyond what is listed in the table of contents?

EDIT: And upon reading, I really like where this is going. Please continue :icon_razz:

I know this post is late but the guide is very good and you should finish it.
Then many people will read it :O (well anyway I will).

Hope you read this post

I think it has the makings to be a good guide, but like a few others said, you need to take into account the quest system, otherwise it has absolutely no place in the futuristic tribalwars worlds we play in.
