How does a new player get battle experience? On the paladin pop up it says:
    "Attacking
A paladin can gain experience by personally leading an attacking army into battle. The amount of experience gained depends on the amount of defending troops defeated. Your paladin will not gain any experience from attacking yourself."
I've attacked several barbarian villages with the the paladin and no experience. The popup goes on to say that he does not get experience attacking of defending himself. IF he does not get exoerience from undefended villages, I thing that page should say so!

You need to actually kill units for it to be a battle. A barbarian village isn't going to have units in it unless it's stacked or it was once a player that no one bothered to clear.
