Scavenging Haul question

Hello, I am a returning player and scavenging is totally new to me..
I want to ask if there is a haul capacity threshold that you "dont have" to bypass.

I now that:
1) the more the better
2) keep enough to feel comfortable defending and send the rest to scavenge.

What if I just started a new server and I need to balance both village progression and income...
Should I aim for TOTAL 50.000+ haul capacity ? is it overkill ?
