This is it, the thing none have been waiting for: The serious debate threa


The topic can change in the course of this thread, but please keep it philosophical/serious/constructive/educational.

Good topics can be:
- life in space
- life after death
- the human instincts and how the influence our daily lives
- why nature is a fragile, but balanced thing
- how big is space / is there a thing after space
- the purpose/beauty of the night

To make this work, you need to be in the slumber of the night, when time stands still, you have nothing to worry about and can open your mind for other things.

Now, it isn't night everywhere now, so this discussion would die before it even started, so here's a pic to get you in the mood:

Man strives for knowledge so that he may somehow better his life, and the lives of his dear ones.

surely this implies that most scientists believe in god when the reverse is true.

I think Its just that men love inventing and constructing stuff cos we never really grow up.

We are curious for many reasons. Some strive for a balance in their life and some look for something to light the dark corners of thier life. Some do it because of religion wondering how faithful they can be and what are their rewards for being faithful. Sometimes we tend to be curious to better than the next person. Wanting to fight something that makes them special and sometimes we tend to take that power and use it the wrong way but I believe in the end all our curiosity comes down to one thing. We're lost.

But why are they curious?

Instincts. In ancient times, the humans that were curious could much easier figure out new types of food and shelter, and therefore gain an advantage, and survive. Therefore, the chromosomes that gave the human brain and thinking curious sides survived, and developed through the generations.

I DISAGREE.Men have destroyed more,then they created.God say there can be heaven on earth,but men have refuse to allow this to take place.I'll give you another example...The second professor after George....
He bared many women, taking the're jewel of womanhood against their rights.This continued on his WHOLE term in office,but he was married.Everyone in the house knew,but nothing was done.He was not the first to do so..They were given the seat at the head,only to fill the're GUT with they own selfish desires.All the professors,DID MEAN things to other countries.Society was given a truth to believe.Once believed,there was war. Many wars started ,were unclean.
And who was in office,MEN.History speaks for itself.It was said men need protection from themselve.I've lived many rains on this planet in knowing,that saying was true.Putting the men down,no that's not it.Taking sides?No that's not it.Spoke the truth? THAT,i did.

Not all men is included in this Saga,but MOST IS.And THAT'S the BOTTOMLINE.I've come to accept this true,why can't others.I had great teachers who gave me a portal into this world....:icon_cool:

I can´t arse myself to read most of the replies here, but whatever.

I believe man seeks knowledge because he hates the unknown. It makes him feel dumb, small, ignorant, which is nothing he likes. While there are naturally other reasons, I believe this is the one, main reason why we strive to develop. We all know how egoistic and self centered man is...

I also believe this is the reason why we have religions, since no man can answer the questions on what happens after death, exactly how the world was created etc.

This is also proved by the fact that more and more people are becoming atheists as science progresses. People used to believe that the world was a branch on a tree in the ancient Norse religions, but as more and more of these questions are answered, religion has less and less power. Although I never think that religion will ever be powerless, due to the question on what happens after death.

I agree with that. I think religion was kinda developed to try to "shine a torch into the darkness" so to speak.

Humanity just likes to know, without any shadow of a doubt, that it is superior. And for that, we need knowledge.

I dont say it is good. they are curious they explore and if they see something unknown they gonna destroy it if it could be a thread.

First of all instead of using men, use mankind. Men as in males aren't the only ones who do bad. Mankind fight wars because someone is usually different than them. Mankind fight wars because we want power, wealth and to be better than the next person. Today it saddens me when I see people fighting to put an end to a racial word or something. If we stopped worrying about what people think of us and stop looking at the past. We need to stop trying to get something because of something that happened in the past. What makes me mad is what happened to Native Americans and how thier race was nearly killed off and they barely get anything yet other races(will not mention) get more(holidays, etc.) for something else. People call racism is the worst atrocities of mankind. I believe the worst is trying to stop what can't be stopped.

The worst is the many that die for a ignorant cause. People who judge people wrongly who don't even know what's going on. As an example how people mock George Bush for the war in Iraq. When someone says, "I hate George Bush." When they should be saying I hate Saddam Hussien, Osama Bin Laden and others. I feel sorrow for the families who suffer a tragedy and such a big loss for what happened on 9/11/01. The families who lost mothers, fathers, daughters, sons to terrorist. When those families here the mockery towards the Iraq war they seem to feel they are hated. They feel their tears are nothing.

In the end people are who they are, we argue and bicker, but when we cross that line and kill another, we are animals.

What is knowledge anyone? To someone who is feels superior to another, knowledge is knowing to suppress them and to be superior always.

A few of you have talked about humankind has done terrible deeds and awhile back I thought in long contention about it. I realized something that we all know, something most of us are using now, we have a self-conscience, sentient mind and that's why we are destructive.

Think about it, all a human is, is a heart and a mind. That's all that keeps us running, on a philosophical level at least. All animals have hearts but we are the only ones who have minds. It's interesting that the only animals on this planet with a mind, are the only animals that are self-destructing to itself and destructive to other species in a way that differs from other animals. Other animals, to a far less degree, are sometimes self-destructive and destructive, but this is only due to pure survival, humans do this out of "Honour, the accumulation of a bunch of paper and metal disks, what is right, desire, and superiority."

But humans not only have a mind for destruction, we have a mind to realize what is happen but we dare not open our mouths and speak loud enough. Skymage once said something similar to this, "No, a majority of players haven't spoken out on this, a minority have, albeit a loud minority." This is happening with our destruction of everything, a minority of people are being loud to protect their paper and metal disks, and stomping out resistance to the majority that know what is happening is wrong.

But one voice on the side of purification, if the voice can be loud and pure could reach to the corners of this now small world and band us together to stop this madness.

Seriously, all this would stop if one person, free from corruption of this matter would stand up and protest alone. Why alone? Because no one else has a strong enough voice to protest alone so the very idea of someone, a lone person, standing up against what's seems like an unbeatable foe would make many stand up in supporting their comrade, and many more stand up in support for their own reasons.

This is why I dislike the idea of democracy, it's supposedly ruled by the majority, but it's the minority's voice that is always heard so it's always done. Besides, events of the world are truely never decided by an actual majority. It is often a minority of the majority that can't take anymore and stands up that starts the critical events in history by banding together the quite majority into a transcended majority. In the past 100 years, with my limited study on it, I can name dozens and dozens of minorities of majorities that have stood up and let their own voice be heard for once and then sparked a revolution*.

*Revolution- Sweeping or drastic change.
