Today was a sad day here in the states. Sandy hit the States and we lost a great piece of history one of the few tall ships afloat the bounty was lost today.

HMS Bounty...at one with the sea...global voyager...movie star...dedicated to preserving the fine art of square-rigged sailing.

The HMS Bounty is one of the most famous ships in the world. Known for the storied mutiny that took place in Tahiti in 1789 on board the British transport vessel, the current Bounty, a replica, has survived to tell the tale. Built for the 1962 movie “Mutiny on the Bounty” with Marlon Brando, HMS Bounty sails the country offering dockside tours in which one can learn about the history and details of sailing vessels from a lost and romanticized time in maritime history. Since her debut in “Mutiny on the Bounty”, HMS Bounty has appeared in many documentaries and featured films such as the Edinburgh Trader in Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Mans Chest with Johnny Depp.

UPDATED NEWS!!!!!!!! We received a distress call for Bounty at 1830 Sunday evening October 28th that the Ship lost power and the pumps were unable to keep up with the dewatering. At that time we immediately contacted the USCG for assistance. A C130 was sent to there position approximately 90 miles SE of Cape Hatteras. Sunday morning approximately 0400, the Captain ordered all hands to abandon ship. There were 16 Crew on board. The USCG dispatched helicopters to rescue the brave crew. At this time, 14 of the 16 crew members have been safely returned to land and are in good health. We are saddened to report that there is still one crew member missing and one crew member that did not make it. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of the crew member that is no longer with us. The USCG is continuing their efforts to search for the missing crew member and we are praying for a safe return. Please keep them in your prayers! We will keep everyone informed as info becomes available.

The HMS Bounty left New London, Conn., on Oct. 25 for a sail to St. Petersburg, Fla. It went due east to try to avoid hurricane Sandy, but the crew was mistaken in thinking the danger had been skirted. - News Source.

Firstly, thanks Les... this is an interesting post: and though not technically tw's related: i hope all agree an interesting one and that we All have the lost seamen/women in our prayers :)

malachi3g : this was from the article linked to- hope it helps :)

On Saturday, Walbridge reported that he expected to face the hurricane’s brunt that night, according to the ship’s Facebook page. The HMS Bounty Organization, which ran the ship, knew its tall-ship devotees might be skeptical of the vessel’s path, so it tried to reassure its 8,000 Facebook followers.

“Rest assured that the Bounty is safe and in very capable hands,” the Facebook page’s administrator wrote. “Bounty’s current voyage is a calculated decision . . . NOT AT ALL . . . irresponsible or with a lack of foresight as some have suggested. The fact of the matter is . . . A SHIP IS SAFER AT SEA THAN IN PORT!”

But Sunday night, the hurricane was proving too much for the Bounty. The ship sent out a distress signal at 9 p.m., according to the Coast Guard. Two hours later, the HMS organization called the Coast Guard, confirming that it had lost radio contact with the vessel.

A Coast Guard C-130 aircraft arrived at the scene an hour later to make direct contact with the Bounty and survey the scene, about 90 miles off Cape Hatteras.

When the captain ordered everyone off the ship about 4:30 a.m., three people struggled to climb into the two lifeboats and were smacked by a wave, the Coast Guard said. One man fell into the water, but others pulled him into one of the boats. Walbridge and Christian were thrown into the water and disappeared.

While the HMS Bounty and its crew foundered in the dark, Steve Bonn was woken from a sound sleep in Camden, N.C., about 4:15 a.m. by his ringing cellphone. The 44-year-old Coast Guard helicopter pilot was needed for a mission: A big boat was sinking.

Whilst very sad for the loss of life and the loss of a beautiful ship, she was not an HMS... that is reserved for fighting vessels and shore establishments of the Royal Navy (UK).

Just because you put in a piece from the internet does not make it correct, also the news is from an American channel... who are bound to get it wrong.

HMS... stands for Her Majesty's Ship! Now you should have a Queen, however you gave it up. Therefore the Bounty cannot be called HMS. Nice that they try to keep the name for historical reasons but it is incorrect.

Replica ship? Yes. Still called the HMS Bounty? Also yes. Just because you define what you want to see it as, doesn't mean it's wrong. Stop taking away from this thread with your petty little stuff about how "It's not an HMS". Really.

Simply put the vessels name is (or was) HMS Bounty, it is a name not a prefix as used by Royal Navy ships ie the original HMS 'Bounty' if you like ...

Oh dear... We are so perfect but just keep failing in everyway!

May I draw your attention to the fact that just because the 'British Press' state something, don't (is that your venacluar?) make it right!

HMS is bestowed upon ships that have been commissioned into the Royal Navy. The 'Bounty' which was remade for the film was not! Therefore her real name is 'THE BOUNTY'.

Put numerous clicky things up as much as you would like U6.. does not make you right! The world is full of people pretending to be right all the time....most often they are just empty vessels making a lot of sound.

The CHIP you carry still stands.

Personally I think we need to talk but that would be off line :)

Just to be very accurate here... I make mention of the fact that whilest the loss of the ship is sad, the loss of members of the crew is very sad.

A ship called HMS is infact a war ship, commissioned by Her or His Majesty or by the British Government on behalf of His/Her Majesty. So to continue to insist that a vessel is a war ship is pretty much paramount to belittling the Military.

Now I am now sure about your country but if you bilittle the Military in my country you are going to get a hard time.

Now go away you petty person and live your life in another website
