Perhaps mate... I've been to a lot of places in the world, mostly poor, the far east, formerly eastern block nations, the Middle East, India and many of the Latin American countries, not to mention having worked with many ugandans, Kenyans, and nigerians who were working abroad as Foreign Nationals... and what I've found with most is a much deeper appreciation for family, and simple pleasures. Attributes that used to be very important in our culture but largely missing now. So I do completely understand where you are coming from, and perhaps you are right, this is no worse than giving them a facebook account or something of that nature, although, facebook allows you to more or less attach yourself to your interests. in the 1940's every american knew all their neighbors, everybody close to them. they did not yet have tv's, computers, video games. their lives were still communal, not private.
this is part of why facebook was so successful in fact, humans need community and the developed world lost it in their neighborhoods and tried to fill the vacuum with online communities
eventually, i expect the kids to develop facebook pages, yes, though i personally do not like facebook. i will explain why...
every government in the world would love for all the people of the world to map out their relationships on the internet for them
if the u.s. government, for example, made their own .gov website and asked the world's people to please all make CIAbook accounts, nobody would comply

Is it not nice if he earns money while doing it? It's human nature to expect something in return for any given action.
I work for a company that does these kind of projects and it's a for-profit company, so I have no problem with someone earning a living doing it.
i expect to be a donor, not staff
the staff will ofc need paid, but it will be a very small staff and the pay will be very small as well
there will probably be 2 "mothers" on staff so that the children can always be attended to, yet the mothers can have some time for themselves by alternating shifts
the mothers will receive both food and shelter, obviously, so their actual salary will be generous at even $1 a day
alie on the other hand has his own home for his own family, he needs to pay rent himself and buy them food, so if his work is invested in the orphanage, he needs to earn his living from it
for him to run the orphanage will require about a $65 monthly salary
at dinner time (dusk) a young adult able-bodied male will come to eat, then he will set up a cot or roll out a mattress in the sitting room and sleep there, in the morning he will have breakfast then he will have all day to earn his money
he will be our security, he will make about $2 a week
if you all wish to pay them better than i can and they require, you can discuss it with Alie after the orphanage is operational
i would like to pay them better and they would obviously appreciate being well paid, but at the start, all expenses will need to be kept to a minimum
i will never be accepting contributions for this, as i said, i am a donor
be it ego, pride, etc. (i do enjoy being a hero, i have found it addictive since my first taste, and it is all i have ever wanted to be since - i also do enjoy attention :icon_redface

i have met some doctors and bankers and lawyers who understand their worth
i have met many janitors and mechanics and roofers who do not
my intention is to show, not just that an orphanage could be started on a $2,000 budget spread across 6 months, but to document how it can be done
maybe, the orphanage and tw will both produce some of the next generation of heroes
whether they be scientists or janitors
Are you seriously going to waste these kids time by teaching them to play TW? If computers/internet is such a rare item there use them for something useful. The only power people have in these shithole African countries is by having dollars or through the barrel of an AK47. At least teach them how to make some money online so they can have a better life. Leave TW to the aspies and no lifers. These kids deserve better.
