i predict Alie Smart (who has never played TW before this world, who never even owned a computer before Christmas) will soon be one of the most familiar names in TW
I met Alie in 2003, in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He was about 14 years old then, an amazing youth filled with unlimited potential and faith. Alie lived in a small shack with his large family in the docks neighborhood (the docks are never the good area of town) in Freetown, Sierra Leone (the poorest, least developed, least live-able nation on earth at the time). To this day, the vast majority of the people have no electricity or plumbing, they cannot read or write, they cannot add or subtract 2 digit numbers accurately with any consistency. I am not insulting them, I am explaining their situation. Today they are ranked 184 out of 187 nations on the UN Human Development Index Report.

I was 30 years old when we met and I began, at that time, to do humanitarian work in Sierra Leone. I involved Alie as much as I could. In 2007, I started a small business for him and taught him to keep books and budget finances. Then I started a charity for him to operate. It was a very petty charity financed exclusively by myself, my mother and my best friend. We rented a few rooms for disabled people, bought chickens for them and built chicken coops, laid a cement floor for a man with polio who could not use his wheelchair in the soft dirt where he lived, fixed a leaky roof that dripped on a grandmother's head when she slept, etc. Alie was 18, we were strictly small scale. He has continued through the years to work with 2 orphanages I helped start, as well as many other NGO's and projects.

Today, he is ready to start an orphanage himself and just brokered a deal on the Tribal Wars Orphans' home...

With our house in order, the foundation of our plans are established. As you can hear in the video, we plan to have the orphanage registered next month, take possession of the home in April, and in May the orphanage will hopefully be fully operational, or we will be looking at June. We will then teach the Tribal Wars Orphans to use computers and the internet (something no primary or secondary schools in Sierra Leone offer, only Uni's), we will teach them English skills and encourage their social interaction with people from all over the world, we will teach math skills + time management = efficiency, we will teach them to communicate and coordinate with people from all around the world in a structured teamwork environment. We will teach them all this while playing a game. We will teach the Tribal Wars Orphans to play Tribal Wars.

:icon_eek:

As is mentioned in the video, we are not accepting investments at this time. We are not soliciting for donations, we are explaining who we are. We are a tribe of a heroes, a tribe of oprhans.

I could simply post to our profile, but when I made the prediction about Alie, it provoked a lot of discussion which was off topic in that thread. The demand for a thread for this topic has already been established, long before this world began in fact. This is where, when, how and why the story (the what) begins. This is where I will address, as time permits, enquiries and debates. This is where I expect Alie will soon make his first post. This is the thread. We will see what tapestry it weaves. :icon_wink:

That's nice if it ends up happening and you're not asking for money. Certainly makes more sense than your insane ramblings before but still skeptical and no idea what it has to do with tw but whatever

I'm impressed with the concept. Of course, if your ramblings have tended to be insane, that may detract from the concept.

I'll have to check to see if my company's doing any projects in Sierra Leone. Tough place and good to hear you helped a little.

Is it not nice if he earns money while doing it? It's human nature to expect something in return for any given action. If you do something for free you feed your ego, for example. A strong example of a man like that would be Bill Gates, who truly is a man to be highly respected, but a person should never mistake anything a person does for anything other than what it really is.

I work for a company that does these kind of projects and it's a for-profit company, so I have no problem with someone earning a living doing it. I think folks would be concerned if the first time they ever heard about it was in an appeal for money. After all, we all have imaginary relatives who died with massive amounts of money in Nigeria that nice people, by the grace of God, would be willing to help transfer into our bank accounts if we'd just send them a few thousand to get the process started.

i will reply to specific posts later when i have more time, but had to take a moment to post something

i expected at least some degree of hate (if for no other reason than myself) in the immediate response to this thread, perhaps enough to close the thread, even if the thread itself did not violate forum rules
i expected much more skepticism and many more questions at the very least, again perhaps enough to close the thread, even if the thread itself did not violate forum rules
i considered reminding folks that if they went overboard with their replies, this thread could be closed prematurely on a topic that is relevant to at least this specific world and that many people would like to know more about, question more, see what happens, etc

the initial responses to this thread prove that i have greatly under-estimated you all in general
i am sorry for thinking less of you than what you warranted
i am humbled by the responses and impressed by you all

i will gladly address the couple of questions posted, as well as some that have not yet been posted, and provide further content as time permits
and when i post those replies, i will assume that i am speaking to a better character than i would have presumed yesterday

respect to ALL of YOU

This is a great idea. I don't really care about the tribalwars side of it as much as the fact that you're doing this with your own money

And after you explained about the social side of it tribalwars is not necessarily a bad game to be playing, as there is a ton of communication in English, so a fun way for some of them to learn English. I hope that everything goes well and you can get this project turned into a reality!

Shahyd, Thanks. Much respect...

And yes Earl, let's be sure that their first major experiences with the Western culture and english language is the trash talking flame wars that occur here incessantly. :icon_rolleyes:

i will address this concern first simply because it is the easiest, no offense Garrock, i am not saying it is not valid
i expressed concern myself about how this idea would be received in the forums, though i am less concerned than you all might be about what it reveals about the West to the kids, when they do begin reading and posting here
i am more concerned with how people interact with them

the first time i got on the internet with a computer that operated on windows (i am old enough that the first time i was online windows did not exist) i went to chat rooms eager to speak to people from all over the world as i often got to do while performing humanitarian work
i had met a lot of amazing people
i went to 1 chat after another, aim, yahoo, etc. and what i saw there was worse than Jerry Springer

the first people these kids interact with will be from my tribe, or my mates outside the tribe
it has been noted both by the people in my tribe and outside my tribe that the members of my tribe seem to have been selected with 1 thing in mind, 1 common characteristic, a certain personality type
the orphanage was planned before the premade

eventually they will begin interacting with players idk, but in these forums anybody who uses a racial or religious slur will be immediately silenced at least
while this might not be the ideal community, what is?
there are some christian sites that perhaps might be a better environment, but i do not think i need to point out some potential issues there
the kids do not need brainwashing, they do not need a single perspective, they need a global perspective
but they need to attain this in graduated steps

first they can only communicate with people of my choosing, there will be a separate skype chat specifically for this purpose, not tribal related
then they can communicate with anybody, but only in these forums, not on skype
eventually they can speak to anybody on skype

there is a lot of future discussion in that last line in particular
there are reasons orphanages do not allow kids to video chat with any tom, dick or harry, or in most cases basically anybody at all
some of the reasons are good, some are bad

perhaps the best reason is exploitation in general
an example of a bad reason, would be as i alluded to early, limiting their perspective to a single point of view

personally, i hope the kids meet a respectable homosexual before they meet a gay-basher, but tbh i want them to meet both
i am a socialist personally (how dare my own mate mention Bill Gates in this thread :icon_razz:), at least until something better comes along, but i want them to talk to capitalists, even imperialists
i want them to meet the racists one day, when they are ready
i want them to be able to understand the world outside their own town (the house is in Waterloo, Sierra Leone btw) because i want them to be a part of it

it is their best chance of improving not only their own lives, not only their own communities, but your lives as well tbh
it is not only the West that has something to offer Africa, Africa has something to offer the West as well
those who follow the developments will come to see it very rapidly :icon_wink:

Perhaps mate... I've been to a lot of places in the world, mostly poor, the far east, formerly eastern block nations, the Middle East, India and many of the Latin American countries, not to mention having worked with many ugandans, Kenyans, and nigerians who were working abroad as Foreign Nationals... and what I've found with most is a much deeper appreciation for family, and simple pleasures. Attributes that used to be very important in our culture but largely missing now. So I do completely understand where you are coming from, and perhaps you are right, this is no worse than giving them a facebook account or something of that nature, although, facebook allows you to more or less attach yourself to your interests. Either way, good luck.

before i address the next issue, i will make a quick reply to this
in the 1940's every american knew all their neighbors, everybody close to them. they did not yet have tv's, computers, video games. their lives were still communal, not private.
this is part of why facebook was so successful in fact, humans need community and the developed world lost it in their neighborhoods and tried to fill the vacuum with online communities

eventually, i expect the kids to develop facebook pages, yes, though i personally do not like facebook. i will explain why...

every government in the world would love for all the people of the world to map out their relationships on the internet for them
if the u.s. government, for example, made their own .gov website and asked the world's people to please all make CIAbook accounts, nobody would comply
i am not accusing the creators of facebook of working for the cia
but if the cia or nsa has never approached them, if the cia or nsa did not monitor facebook, that would be a foolish mistake imo

thank you for your comments Garrock

I'm impressed with the concept. Of course, if your ramblings have tended to be insane, that may detract from the concept.

I'll have to check to see if my company's doing any projects in Sierra Leone. Tough place and good to hear you helped a little.
i will reply to the second part first
though it is not what he meant, many Western companies offer to match charitable contributions of their employees
if anybody here donates to any cause, you might wish to see if your company offers this, it is not one of the more commonly known programs, but that does not mean it is not common

now the first point...

my name alone can often detract from a project
consider if xshahzad (for example) had posted this thread, would there be any suspicion of a scam?

here are several organizations i have worked with in Sierra Leone

http://www.4-him.net/index.php
http://www.mercyships.org/
http://mercyorphanage.blogspot.com/

i was never a member of any of them, you will not find my name on any of their sites
i worked with them to accomplish their goals, but i did not represent them, i was not them

Alie will run this orphanage, he will post here over the weekend, i expect
he may not be able to read and reply to everything, he prefers to speak to people
he speaks english more than he reads or writes it, and since he never owned a computer before, he is not a good typist yet
here in the forums there is order and structure and he can read your posts when he is offline, even prepare responses to post later
in a group skype chat where many people are posting simultaneously and using a shorthand version of english, that is the most overwhelming communication for him atm
by speaking and listening, he can communicate much more efficiently than in text
i will try to help him represent his program faithfully, but it is his program
i am funding the start up and i am an ocean away
still, i would prefer even greater "distance" from the program

Alie's name cannot be the only on the application for the registration, there needs to be officialS of the NGO listed
xhshahzad as been offered an official position in the NGO
http://forum.tribalwars.net/member.php?96007-xshahzad
xservatx has been offered an official position in the NGO
http://forum.tribalwars.net/member.php?81109-xservatx

if both accept, we have 3 names, my name need not be listed, i will have no official position
i am me, i represent me, and atm i lead the tribe, therefore i represent it
Alie can represent himself and has already begun doing so on skype
soon he will do so here as well
soon the kids can represent themselves

i am simply a donor atm in regards to the NGO, both of resources and advice
there are already other donors of advice, and soon will be other donors of resources as well
as far as resources go, i plan to donate little tbh, that is part of the point though i noticed 1 thing was cut in editing
i clean floors in the u.s. atm, i am at the bottom of the pay scale
i do not expect my monthly contribution to ever exceed $250, for 1 year if necessary, though hopefully only 6 months tbh
i would like to have no more than $1500 total invested in this project over its first 6-9 months
i expect 2 years from now they will own 10-15 hectares and have a newly constructed building on the farm and to be capable of self-sufficiency, at least
in that i mean they may be able to expand their operation, not simply sustain, without further donation from anybody

at the start, regrettably, i will be very influential
over time my influence will wain, and idk who will overshadow it
1 year from now, the only influence i will have left is the memory of Alie

That's nice if it ends up happening and you're not asking for money.
Is it not nice if he earns money while doing it? It's human nature to expect something in return for any given action.
I work for a company that does these kind of projects and it's a for-profit company, so I have no problem with someone earning a living doing it.
i expect to be a donor, not staff
the staff will ofc need paid, but it will be a very small staff and the pay will be very small as well

there will probably be 2 "mothers" on staff so that the children can always be attended to, yet the mothers can have some time for themselves by alternating shifts
the mothers will receive both food and shelter, obviously, so their actual salary will be generous at even $1 a day
alie on the other hand has his own home for his own family, he needs to pay rent himself and buy them food, so if his work is invested in the orphanage, he needs to earn his living from it
for him to run the orphanage will require about a $65 monthly salary
at dinner time (dusk) a young adult able-bodied male will come to eat, then he will set up a cot or roll out a mattress in the sitting room and sleep there, in the morning he will have breakfast then he will have all day to earn his money
he will be our security, he will make about $2 a week

if you all wish to pay them better than i can and they require, you can discuss it with Alie after the orphanage is operational
i would like to pay them better and they would obviously appreciate being well paid, but at the start, all expenses will need to be kept to a minimum

i will never be accepting contributions for this, as i said, i am a donor

be it ego, pride, etc. (i do enjoy being a hero, i have found it addictive since my first taste, and it is all i have ever wanted to be since - i also do enjoy attention :icon_redface:)
whatever

the point to me is this...

i am the bottom of the pay scale in the west, yet even i can still start this, personally
whether "this" be an orphanage, a medical clinic, a school, church, mosque, whatever
each of you is capable of, or will one day soon be capable of, doing something like this

what some of your are capable of, or might already be doing, could easily dwarf this
i do not think my ego is inflated, not by much anyway :icon_razz:
i think i fully appreciate my worth
and i know many of the youth in this game do not fully appreciate their own worth and what they are capable of

i spent considerable time in the u.s. specifically during my youth and i have been here almost exclusively since 2008
i have met some doctors and bankers and lawyers who understand their worth
i have met many janitors and mechanics and roofers who do not

my intention is to show, not just that an orphanage could be started on a $2,000 budget spread across 6 months, but to document how it can be done
maybe, the orphanage and tw will both produce some of the next generation of heroes :snob:
whether they be scientists or janitors

Are you seriously going to waste these kids time by teaching them to play TW? If computers/internet is such a rare item there use them for something useful. The only power people have in these shithole African countries is by having dollars or through the barrel of an AK47. At least teach them how to make some money online so they can have a better life. Leave TW to the aspies and no lifers. These kids deserve better.
i am not going to debate whether money can be made from tw, not in their forums anyway, i am fairly certain that is against the rules

if you have ideas for this program, let's hear what we should be doing?

the triple post is against the rules, but it is often an excusable breach, i hope that is the case here
i am sure somebody will post before my next post, obviously i could have asked somebody to simply bump the thread to avoid the triple post

my next post, hopefully, will include our full start up budget in an itemized list
