They may have made the game more accessable to new players, but I feel the newer settings (minus the Church) have improved gameplay somewhat.

The only drawback is using the HC strategy, which is best on 3-tech worlds.

I personally prefer the W38 settings. The 10 tech system looks very interesting. I am probably going to join W39, but I might also play W38, and see which goes better.
