Discussion: The Watchtower

Greetings Warriors!

With the first ideas surrounding this dating back years we are finally doing something we haven't done in quite some time: adding a new building!

Watchful tribal warriors surely haven't missed our teases and hints on Facebook and InnoGames TV, so it might come as no surprise to you that the new building is: the watchtower!

The watchtower is a completely new addition to the village and not replacing any existing building. The watchtower is a tool to help new and experienced players to filter information, especially in mid to late game. In short it detects incoming attacks and automatically tags them with the most important information. Experienced players will still be able to gather more information by watching incoming attacks closely. Of course the watchtower also comes with its own costs, which makes strategic placement important and can also be an interesting target for offensive players.

This is how the tower works in detail:

  • Every attack that comes into range is tagged with the army size and if it is led by a nobleman.
  • This does not only affect attacks on villages within the range but also attacks traveling through the range.
  • Tags on the attack are kept, even if the attack moves out of range.
  • Tags are being displayed on the village incoming overview and for PA players on the incoming screen.
  • The detection range can be increased by upgrading the tower.
  • The maximum level of the tower is 20.
  • The requirements are the same as for the church (headquarter 5, farm 5).
  • On browser the watchtower range is displayed on the map. Mobile users have to use the watchtower screen.
More detailed information (all the numbers!) can be found here in our wiki! We also prepared a short video for you, explaining all the new functionality this new feature brings to the game:

We hope you enjoy this new building and the functionality it brings. We are looking forward to see how it influences strategies and counter-strategies on the battlefield!

Make sure to leave your feedback in this thread to let us know what you think!

Good day, just wanna ask/clarify;

When you say "This does not only affect attacks on villages within the range but also attacks traveling through the range."

Does it mean, you can see attacks on other villages on other players/allied players that were in your watchtower range?

@alfonso625 Probably yes

With this building making decisive OPs and fighting standard wars would be almost impossible. How you can possibly get ur longer range caps if opponents know exactly what are fakes and what are reals? Game-breaker building if you ask me. It would probably just lead tribes to win their wars with mass merges, backstabbing or some other shady way on much greater scale then it is now.

The watch tower just took the fun of attacking and defending. All that is left is this once great game is the tedious farming :(

Great update, this should have been in the game years ago.

The complaints that this makes defending too easy are pointless. Competent and active tribes/players have always had a huge advantage when it comes to defence. This helps to bring the less active players up to the same level, creating more competition, and thus more interesting fights.

The game has always been weighted in favour of the defender, with this building that advantage will likely be more obvious, but the building itself is not the cause of the problem.

But I will still not play tw because p2w. Have fun guys.

After this you should add 1 more building.
Snipe building.
Auto snipe for all incoming noble trains under 3 hours.

Tower will provide auto tag and command sharing with your enemies(better than having a spy) and snipe building will do the rest.

By Adding watchtower in game actually a suicidal attempt and killing the soul of this game......that is surprise; which was actually present at the time of Tribal Era.

Watchtower is not at all Tribal thing and was not there at that time, it is like a modern radar or drone.

It is better if InnoGames start a Nuclear War a New Game set with all new and modern technology rather putting them here in TW.

Looks like ill be quitting the game then :) the games just changing all the time for the worse , no wonder you have less people playing than you used to do on the early worlds .

Hi Raavna. I don't think many villages in the tribal era would have confused half a dozen men pushing a single ram for a full-size invading legion :p Nor would sending hundreds of lone rams criss-crossing around the countryside at utterly random times and targets to disguise the handful of vast legions have been a valid 'strategy' at any stage in history. Faking scripts have ruined the game far more than anything InnoGames implements possibly could.

Personally I'd prefer to see worlds with a 10-15% fake limit; so intelligent, co-ordinated fake clearing waves/trains etc. are still a viable tactic, especially for long-distance attacks, but fake-spamming is not. 1% just ain't high enough to do that. But a watchtower (which is expensive enough to require a trade-off between cost and intel) is much more realistic than either mass-faking or fake limits. 15 square radius will be <10 hours in which most attacks are clearly identified, so they can't entirely substitute for tribal activity and defensive ability. Maybe they won't be so bad, even if some more imaginative tactics are required.

I hope you will open some servers without this building.

Watchtower was present in Medieval times. Usually part of a castle.
It's not unusual to presume change is a bad thing, if everyone would also like to get back with any comments after trying it out, that would also be much appreciated.

Watchtower was present even before Medieval times and earlier it was made of Wood.

I have not built the watchtower yet. Does anyone have information about how many points it adds to your village? It is important to know this, because I try to make my villages all the same size in order to hide which villages have churches/watchtowers.

Is the watchtower meant to work only for attacks launched after it is built? A new watchtower doesn't tag attacks already on the way. What happens if a watchtower is upgraded? Will it tag the attacks passing through it's new expanded range?

It's meant to tag attacks launched after building and upgrading. There are however some issues with this currently that are being investigated. Feel free to send in a ticket please, if you experience any issues. Thanks :)
