Yes you can farm abandoned villages. Try and farm as much as possible to get an edge over your neighbors.

The people around you are going to be farming it 24/7. Try supporting the village with your pally until just before your attack lands. That way, if anyone attacks the village they'll lose troops, and there'll be res left over for you.
