Anti-Hacking Petition [revived]

Hi Guys,

As we know - hacking is an ever present threat in online gaming. However, due to its very nature, moderators find it extremely difficult to stop hackers. This is unfortunate, but it is the case. So, it falls to us, the users of the game - the gaming community - to put a stop to hackers.

If hackers were to lose everything - their credibility, integrity and any future in this game, would they really risk it? Chances are they'd at least stop to think about it, which would hopefully stop some of them. This is what we hope to achieve with this.

This, in effect, will be a sort of community-watch. I have sent around a mass-petition in game, asking a few tribes to sign it. So far, the following tribes have signed this petition:

~D~
SCUM
pRo
WICKED
R.L.
SYN

If anyone else would like to sign this petition, please let me know and the list will be updated. If you sign, what we would like you to do is as follows:

a) You aid moderators in their work to stop hackers.
b) You make this petition known in game so others will sign it.

We hope this petition will eventually have been signed by the majority of World 37. We encourage other tribes to come forward and pledge their support to this cause, so they may be added to the list.

Yes, hacking is a threat. Yes, it is a big one. However, World 37 seems to be a special case - we seem to have quite a lot of it going on, something that is not good. Hence why I came up with this idea, and with support from the aforementioned tribes, decided to bring it forward.

Hopefully it will serve to bring our community closer together, working together to enhance our own enjoyment, and to put a stop to the people who cannot play fairly and seek to win and destroy the enjoyment of others through any means necessary.

So without further delay, here is the current petition:

Hacking takes the fun out of the game. It will also lead to more people leaving the game that pay to play.

I hope TW staff will take this matter serious, review their security measures, and put new devices into place that will prevent this.

To whomever is doing this, Tribal Wars is just a game. If you're losing, be a sport about it. There will be new worlds where you can try again. Hacking other player's accounts is cheating and you're not going to change the outcome of this game by doing it.

Okay, since this ain't violating no rules... Technically... I'll just settle with replying to it.

Frankly, I find this whole petition pointless. You make it to show "WE DON'T LIKE HACKERS/HACKING!".

Okay, usually a petition have a purpose... Like having something changed... But what purpose does this have?
1) Hacking is illegal in the game. If it can be proven, it's very harsh bans.
2) Hacking is by general consensus not acceptable.
3) Most hackers are attention-seeking kiddos who thinks it's fun, or bored idiots who just think it's fun.

You guys making this kind of petition is counter-productive; you give them the attention they desire. This topic will have about minus zero percent effect on any hacker whatsoever.

This is like if you'd make a petition against murders in real life... What would the point be? Showing people that murder isn't okay? Well, I doubt any murderer at all actually thought the murder would be okay before he commited it... And I would bet that a hacker would think the same about his hacking; he won't think the majority thinks it's okay.

But sure, you go ahead with the petition... We don't care as long as rules aren't violated. But I have a couple of statements:

1) Ingame procedures won't be changed about it; if there is proof, then we ban. Please don't come with Skype-log, MSN-logs, IRC-logs or such things as "proof" and expect us to ban. External source proof is seldom useful.
2) Any kind of hanging out people for hacking in those forums, will be considered harrassment and will render in bans.

That's all I have to say about it right now.

Frankly I could not care less. Apparently there is nothing TW can do to stop hackers. I hate the fact that players have to cheat to get ahead in the game, and this petition is to stop that.

Jirki88, if we have enough players showing their solidarity on this, then maybe the powers that be would be willing to take a closer look and review the current security measures used? Because if you're telling me that nothing is going to change, then I'm going to delete right now and no longer contribute money to this game.

I have a choice of where to spend my hard earned money, and I choose tribal wars. If this isn't going to be taken seriously, then I'll go back to putting money into console games.

Ditto. Premium does not seem worth it anymore if people can just steal your money by hacking your account.

As I said, we can't change it since there's nothing we can change in the procedures. We have ways to obtain proof, and if we don't obtain proof... Then it's a dead end. What are we going to change?

Sure we can. Plenty of people actually get banned for hacking. Just you don't hear about most cases. Also, sometimes what you'd consider "hacking" isn't really hacking... Rather people being careless with their passwords or using very insecure passwords. Ain't even hacking.

And I still fail to see how this petition will stop hacking in any way at all? I thought it was pretty obvious that hackers hack because they think it makes them cool or because they think it's fun. It'd be very naive to expect that they don't realize that they destroy for others.

The thing is that we can only use ingame proof for the simple reason that anything else... skype / irc / msn logs and so forth can be altered without any way for us to know. Ingame proof we can access properly, and know whether it is accurate or not.

Yes, hacking sucks, and none of us wants to see this kind of thing happening in game.. don't forget that us mods play the game too. There is a reason there are harsh penalties brought against anyone who is proved to have hacked an account.

At the end of the day, this has to be balanced against the people who would also accuse their enemies of hacking in an attempt to get them banned, and provide false proof from external sources to back them up (and yes this happens too). The only way we can eliminate this kind of behaviour from any investigations, is to stick to ingame proof only.

If hacking is a real issue here, then try doing things like changing your passwords on a regular basis, and being sure to keep them to yourself. As Jirki has pointed out, at least some of the time... so-called "hacking" is actually a direct result of people sharing their passwords with people they should not have trusted.

At the end of the day... if you have the proof someone is hacking accounts, or breaking the rules in any other way, then report them. These accusations are all taken seriously and investigated properly. Going on a witch hunt however solves very little, and could infact get yourselves into trouble if the information you are spreading about others ingame is false.

Also if you choose to change your password, don't change it to something that's going to be very simple. Try not to use the same password you use for other things.

Make the password complicated with numbers and letters garbled in.

How is a world meant to deal with this topic if we can speak about it? People hacking our accounts is serious.

A simple 'we are aware of the problem and looking into it' wouldnt hurt from the TW staff either.

Conor is in the right here. PP cost money. Doesnt TW think they have a duty of care towards people and protect them from this kind of thing?

You can't deal with it in any way but having secure passwords? Any kind of banning or similiar is done by moderators, not regular users, so what's the point of discussing it here?

A simple 'we are aware of the problem and looking into it' wouldnt hurt from the TW staff either.

As I've said, we know there is people that "hack", and if we have proof, we share out harsh bans. What else is there to say?

And you think the moderator team is here to... Sit around and look pretty? We actually work, even if you people don't usually see any of it done, since we only discuss specific cases with the banned person and not everyone.

Well as I cant afford to make another comment and my post has been edited, I am not going to discuss this any more. Conor, shout me on skype.

One final thing that I dont think is infractable....

There is obviously a problem with accounts getting hacked at the moment. Thank you conor / toby and anyone who put this on the public forums so everyone can see and be aware. Obviously you dont have the correct privs to send a message to everyone in W37 to make them aware.

/end of my pov on this.

If there is a problem, which I don't know, a thread here fills no use whatsoever anyways. If someone gets hacked, send in a ticket. Then it gets dealt with.
