what's the point in staying inside your comfort zone?
^^ this. Some of the most amazing art I've ever created was in fields I'd never tried before, and concepts I wasn't comfortable with at all. Yes, it can be ego-deflating to be good in one area, and fail in another new, untested endeavor.
I used to be 'comfortable' with pen-and-ink illustrations (pointillism, specifically), was recognized and published, and I was usually unhappy with anything that I created in other fields. I was finally 'required' to create pieces in unfamiliar media, however, and eventually found that my true artistic joy came from stone carving & gem faceting. I doodled since I was a kid, but never sculpted before, and had never met anyone who did. Had I not been forced out of my comfort zone, I never would have discovered the art that I enjoy and excel at most.
