[noob question] How to make spirals around render

I searched it on google, using any term I could think of. But, sadly I don't know what it is called.

Can anyone tell me how people make the spiral around there render that is very smooth? The only tip I have gathered is something about the pin tool.
So, can anyone tell me where I can search this?

You do it with pen tool.

Also the spiral effect looks bad when used by newbies.
