The reason for the barb attacking is cause the mission quests once u get the quest to send troops to support another near by village in time of attack so its trying to sorta impulse u to move your troops i am not sure if i just want to kill it the attack or build one axe and let there spear or what ever kill it so then the Barb village can have more ODA then all of those still in beginner protection still not sure tho.

Even with no wall your village has enough defense to kill 1 spear.
