Well I didn't farm for 3 or so months and look where I am in the world, rank 8.

i farm...but the size i am at i cant really call it farming.........only when i a need some nobles in a certain village........ i have to build back up nukes in a certain cluster i just use my surrounding def vills to replenish quickly......add that with the balance script...and i can get by

there's no one right answer on how to play this game. it all depends on how active, and lazy you are
if you farm as much as you can, no need to fret. if you're much more active, and need the extra rez, farming more is what you need to do
