i might be able to explain it better.
though Nahuel pretty much hit the nail on the head each village smithy has a tech limit of 15 and each unit tech can be maxed to lvl.3 the strongest tech. but also youll have to be careful about which unit you research as you cant go past the limit and you dont get refiunds for you tech research if you revoke it. which means you'll have to choose which village you want to be offensive and which you want to be defensive.
which also means you wont be able to mix armies. it also means youll have to find you own comb.

if you do send support to a different village your units i believe retain their tech lvl.

Troops will fight at the tech level researched in the village they are supporting. If you send lvl 3 sp/sw to a village researched to only lvl 1, your troops defend at lvl 1, not lvl 3.
